SLOPMOTION is a short animation film collaboration from Lois Pawson and Gill Dixon, both members of a group of artist and designer-makers who exhibited in December 2023 and January 2024 at the Skyway Gallery in Shoreham-by-Sea. They regularly exhibit work locally and in the wider UK, but this is their first joint project.

Whilst at Skyway, they came up with the SLOPMOTION film collaboration, starting with a simple textile puppet made by Gill. Both artists have wide and differing skill sets. Lois has experience with stop-motion and model-making, graphic design and illustration. Gill is trained in set and costume design and brought her classical music knowledge to 'SLEEP' their first collaborative project.

Feeling that the puppet required a 'period' ethos without rigidly adhering to the style, they first sourced the poem Lullaby by the Edwardian writer E. E. Nesbit, the much-loved author of The Railway Children and Five Children and It, to provide a narrative for the film.

This short film mixes stop-motion and live action puppetry over a soundtrack and voice-over to give a feel of the era when the poem was written. Soft colours and simple scenic elements, atmospheric lighting and music from the period combine to produce a dreamlike effect. The artists both enjoyed this initial collaboration so much that they are now working on more ideas for future short films. Their next film 'SILVER' is in production now.
